Let’s spy on Hanna’s role
2011 came the thriller Hanna. And now years later, it comes out in a new avatar. The film has been turned into episodes and will be streaming on Amazon. The director has given a spin to the story and has added new elements and colour treatment to the frames. The wilderness is stark and the tones used are crisp.
The first episode was telecasted with much passion and fervour and got a 24-hour preview the day after the Super Bowl. And who doesn’t watch Super Bowl? The excitement of the game will sure rub-off on the first episode. The first two episodes are premiering at the Berlin Film Festival this week. The critics were given access to only three episodes… from which only 2 were reviewable.
The series revolves around the protagonist who was stolen from a hospital at an early age. She was then stringently trained to become the ultimate field operative in a mysterious, ongoing battle. The main lead, Esme Creed-Miles stars as Hanna, who is trying to figure out why ex-CIA agent Erik (Joel Kinnaman) made her into a cold-blooded fighting machine.
As Hanna, Creed-Miles exhibits a series of emotions that a perfect mixture of wild, untamed danger and innocence that is believable. Her fitness seems commendable, even though the role doesn’t highlight much of the action that she is doing herself.
It is argued that the 48 minute episode though is in narrative style doesn’t go too far to expand the characters. Now that’s odd. Having all the time in the world and not bringing the character to life seems a bit of a shortfall. When you have time on your side, you make use of it. There are times when you want to raise questions because you have logic to answer. But then one let’s go of them thinking this is a fairy tale.

For those who didn’t watch the movie, then you will be thrilled by the episodes. But for those who have seen the movie, drop the baggage and see this one with fresh, new eyes. The episodes have been shot in Spain, Slovakia, and Hungary. Perfectly adding drama and a certain flavour to the episodes.
